Enjoy Island Hopping and Art in the Beautiful Seto Inland Sea
Designated as Japan's first national park in 1934, this area boasts a captivating seascape of over 700 islands forming the Seto Inland Sea. Each island contributing to this archipelagic beauty has its own unique culture and traditions deeply rooted in the local way of life, carrying the essence of 'history' and 'tradition' into the present day. Garnering significant acclaim from international visitors, the Setouchi region has evolved into a premier tourist destination, renowned for its fusion of art with its existing rich tapestry of attractions.
Island hopping with Setouchi yacht charters
To explore the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, one typically relies on high-speed boats or ferries, but schedules may limit seamless travel between destinations. With yacht charters, however, the greatest allure lies in the freedom to island-hop, combining desired destinations to create a tailor-made journey. Crossing the diverse islands that form the Seto Inland Sea, such as Teshima, Naoshima, and Shodoshima, allows for encounters with art installations, island culture, and local life. Why not indulge in a leisurely maritime experience, enjoying Japan's unique seasonal landscapes and gentle breezes?
Shodoshima: Experiencing the art and industrial culture alongside the nature of Setouchi
Located at the heart of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, Shodoshima boasts the largest venue within the Setouchi International Art Festival. It's renowned for its vibrant industries like soy sauce and olive production. Several art installations grace Shodoshima, drawing attention as popular spots on social media. Among them, ‘The Time of the Beginning’ by Shiko Miyake stands out—a sculpture resembling an egg, beautifully set atop a hill where the sunset casts a mesmerizing glow. Another highlight is Aoki Noe's "Soranotama/Kankakei" installed at Kankakei Gorge, the island's highest point and a prime panoramic spot. Overlooking the vast Seto Inland Sea, the changing seasons paint a breathtaking view.
Moreover, there are experiential art activities to enjoy, such as posing for photos with an ‘Regent in Olives’ wig or exploring the ‘Maze Town ’, a recreation of Shodoshima's narrow alleyways. These activities offer ample opportunities to immerse oneself in art while exploring the island's unique charm.
Naoshima: The birthplace of Setouchi art
Since the Edo period, Naoshima has flourished as a pivotal hub of maritime trade. With its ancient streets harmoniously intertwined with contemporary art, the island itself is often likened to a work of art. Naoshima garners global attention as the birthplace of Setouchi art.
Renowned works include Yayoi Kusama's dotted motifs and the architectural marvels of Tadao Ando, such as the ‘Chichu Art Museum’ and the ‘Benesse House Museum’, both representing Naoshima's essence.
Moreover, the ‘Naoshima Bath “I♥YU”’ serves as a nexus for travelers from around the world and the island's residents, designed as a space for interaction. Here, the bathhouse itself becomes an artwork, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a 360-degree art experience while bathing.
Come and immerse yourself in the artful world of Japan, and indeed the world, by visiting Naoshima.
